Modular Construction
50+ Years of Modular Experience
More Successful Modular Projects/Higher ROI for You
Conventional construction faces a 350,000 worker shortfall in 2026, which “will worsen labor shortages, especially in certain occupations and regions, placing further upward pressure on labor costs,” says Anirban Basu, chief economist for Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC).
But the story is different at the Axis Construction. Our deeply experienced modular team continues to demonstrate long-term stability and extensive expertise, as does our conventional construction group.
The modular team brings to every project more than a half century of combined modular expertise across hundreds of successful and award-winning modular projects.
John Buongiorno, Vice President, Modular Division
It starts with John Buongiorno, Vice President, Modular Division. For more than 25 years, John has been at the forefront of the off-site modular construction world, pioneering many of the industry’s innovations and breakthroughs. From his role as past President of the Modular Building Institute to his work with the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) in setting standards for modular construction in healthcare and other sectors to his leadership on some of the highest-profile modular projects in the world, John’s achievements are unmatched and unequalled. More importantly, he brings an extensive track record of innovation, problem-solving, and flawless execution to every modular project—from healthcare to K-12 to college/university to government to housing, and more.
Brent Doucette, Business Development Manager, Modular Division
Just as critical to the modular team’s success is Brent Doucette, Business Development Manager, Modular Division. His 15+ years of modular experience spans successful and award-winning modular projects—from top secret naval base installations to ER expansions at leading hospitals to world-class athletic team facilities to sustainably-centered projects for recycling services firms. Underlying Brent’s extensive modular experience is more than a decade of working in conventional construction. This combination enables Brent to optimize coordination and collaboration between on-site preparation and factory fabrication and ensure precisely orchestrated modular project success.
Tim Stellenwerf, Project Manager
Tim Stellenwerf, Project Manager, is another construction industry veteran who brings an impressive background to the Axis Construction modular team. Tim has more than a decade of experience in modular construction, as well as Superintendent, Program Management, Project Management, and other leadership roles on major construction projects.
Tim’s broad-ranging experience has made him a big proponent of off-site modular construction. “If you look at the logistics alone,” he points out, “when you build on site, you’ve got contractors on top of each other. You’ve got weather. But the controlled environment of off-site construction lets us stage contractors for greater efficiency. We use BIM to integrate coordination of trades. Everything is more streamlined due to high degree of planning and forethought.”
Caroline Casagrande, Assistant Project Manager

Real Advantages in the Real World
How does all this modular experience and expertise translate into real advantages in the real world? Here’s just one example. Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth wanted to capitalize on modular construction’s schedule acceleration to speed the delivery of urgently needed Emergency Department space. Unfortunately, they initially engaged with a less experienced modular firm that wasted months of the hospital’s time before ultimately acknowledging they could not meet the fire, safety, healthcare, and other standards necessary for the hospital’s project.
That’s when Mark Tarlton, Senior Director of Facility Planning & Construction, connected with Axis Construction’s modular team. Our experience with dozens of similar modular healthcare projects allowed us to hit the ground running. Not only did we meet all of the project’s fire, safety, and healthcare code requirements, we were able to greatly accelerate the project’s schedule and recoup almost all the time lost to the initial, less-experienced modular firm.
The project was so successful that the sister hospital of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth located in Milton, MA engaged us to deliver their modular Emergency Department expansion.
The bottom line? For those pursuing new modular projects the choice is clear. Go with the proven performance of the modular team at Axis Construction.
