Hauppauge, NY – July 28, 2025 – Axis Construction Corporation, an award-winning leader in conventional and off-site modular commercial construction for the Northeast, was proud to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating delivery of the new Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center in Amityville for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
The $3 million project was a renovation of a 1950’s building, including exterior improvements and upgraded utilities. Axis Construction was the General Contractor on the project and worked very closely with the client to achieve their vision. This included a lot of field redesign by Axis Construction and ABC Carpentry foreman Matt Lambert to maintain original features to give the facility more of a feeling of being home rather than a traditional facility. Key areas were restored, salvaged, and refinished to retain the warm feeling of the building—including the original ceiling in the former chapel, wood doors, fireplace, and oak floors. The exterior scope included creating new entrances, sidewalks, parking lot, and lighting. All new sewer, site drainage, electrical service, and water tie.
“Projects like this are rare,” noted Chris Lambert, Project Manager at Axis Construction. “Restoring a historic convent to modern standards—while preserving the character and warmth that defined it for generations of Dominican Sisters—was a unique privilege. To now see it serve as a haven for individuals and families facing the challenges of Alzheimer’s and dementia is deeply meaningful.”
Designed by Frank G. Relf Architects, the 11,500 square foot renovation is the first-of-its-kind day facility for Alzheimer’s patients that specifically also helps their families, as reported in this article in the NY Post and Long Island Business News:
NY Post: Amityville’s new Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center includes even a special transit-focused room to teach families how to travel with their affected loved ones — using items such as real LIRR train seats and an airplane row.
“I’d never even imagined something like this — it would have just made life easier,” said Barbara’s son Michael Rabinowitz, who worked with the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America to open the 11,500-square-foot location named after his mom.
“Something like this will just teach you how to live with it. It’s a whole new world for you,” the Oyster Bay man told The Post. Read the entire NY Post article…
