After a successful 24-6 Season, the Axis Softball Club ( 25 year Anniversary) participated for the 2nd Year in a row in the Championship Series for The Town Of Huntington Softball League. After winning the 1st game and losing the 2nd game in a Best of Three Series, it came down to a one game Elimination. Blue Rhino’s( 1st Place ), a Young Team from Northport made up of former Northport HS baseball Players, was a worthy opponent. Rhino’s took a 7-0 first inning lead , leading to a 12-3 lead in the bottom of the 5th inning of a 7 inning game. Axis Players exhausted from the first two games, battled back to a 7th inning showdown with a 13-10 deficit. After an inspiring speech from Mike Ebert, the Axis offense loaded the bases with no outs, and Their MVP Shortstop Joe G, lined a 2 run double in the right field gap. With no outs runners on 2nd and 3rd, the Rhino’s elected to walk Frank, to load the bases and put the not so fleet of foot, Mike Potthoff up with the hope of turning a Double play. Inspired by His teammates chants, Mike “POTT”, lined a single to right, 2 runs crossed the plate, and the elusive Championship Title was firmly in Axis’ hands for the 1st time since 1998. The last Member of that Team, “The Captain” RL, dedicated the Season and the Championship Title to Childhood friend and 20 Year Veteran of Axis SC, Fred Novak who passed away this Summer.
