Hauppauge, NY – January 21, 2026 – Axis Construction Corporation, an award-winning leader in conventional and off-site modular commercial construction for the Northeast, announces that the Lopez Playground Modular Comfort Station—delivered by Axis Modular Systems—is an AIANY Design Awards 2026 winner. New York’s chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) chose the project designed by 1100 Architect as a winner in the Government category.
“We’re proud to play a role in this valuable pilot program to quickly and affordably expand the availability of public restrooms in the city,” says John Buongiorno, Vice President, Modular Division of Axis Construction. “We’re also excited that the NYC Public Design Commission reviewed and approved the project design for other locations throughout the boroughs of New York City.”
The comfort station restroom was designed, fabricated, and installed as part of a pilot project to employ modular construction as a faster, more cost-efficient delivery method for NYC Parks. It was the first time NYC Parks pursued this type of initiative, and was part of a wider pilot program that includes creating a replicable delivery system for future modular facilities. The design and execution of the Lopez Playground Modular Comfort Station were based on the current NYC Parks Standard Public Restroom Design for conventionally constructed public restrooms.
